Witness the art of Pottery and interact with a fifth generation Potter who also skilfully makes pots and vessels of various shapes and sculpts uruvaarams (figurines) out of red clay! The tour offers a unique chance to see pottery being made using the same handcraft methods as in the 18th century. The tour will lead you through each stage of production in sequence, showing how a lump of red clay is transformed into a finished piece of pottery.
The Potter will share with you his experiences of how he had to start learning the art very early in life from the basics of gathering the suitable clay and spreading it out in the sun so that the termites could remove all the air and the foreign particle making the consistency of the clay suitable for binding, making the pot stronger. The artisan will share with you his story of how he was first asked to spin the wheel and how he passed the test to then learn the nuances of making a small clay lamp, then a small pot, a bigger one and how eventually he ended up mastering the art of sculpting these uruvaarams (figurines).
He goes onto share with you his delightful experience of Pottery that gives him joy every day. If you are looking for a classic souvenir from Pollachi, this tour can offer you the perfect chance to grab a dishware/pottery back home!
