Every year, during the early winter months of September and October, the coffee and tea gardens of Anally Estate, interspersed with rainforest patches, come alive with a flurry of bird activities, both resident and minter migrants.
During those months, Anally also forms the backdrop to the one of the most spectacular natural phenomenon in the region – the Great Hornbill Congregation.
The Great Pied Hornbills along with Mountain Imperial Pigeons, occur in hundreds of numbers, flitting about everywhere, out on the hunt, busy feeding and preening.
Some also exhibit courtship behaviour and prepare nesting sites.
For the Hornbills, their favourite food is on the offering – the maesopsis on the umbrella tree have ripened and its feast time for them.
The overall experience is drama on a truly epic scale – The blue winter skies decorated with flocks of mountain imperial pigeons, the screeching hill mynas flying across the sky like miniature hornbills, the tuktuks of the efficient woodpeckers echoing across the landscape and the babblers and bulbuls calling from every direction, drowned by the loud, romantic calls of hornbills.
This exclusive Bird-watching and photography itinerary developed by Thadam Experiences, focus on witnessing and capturing the incredible spectacle of the Great Congregation in its various forms throughout the day.
